‘Pillows of love’: Iconic Japanese egg salad sandwich coming to Canada

Japan's famous tamago sando will be available at 7-Eleven Canada locations starting March 4.

On March 4, Canadians will be able to enjoy the iconic Japanese egg salad sandwich, known as tamago sando, which is set to launch in 7-Eleven locations across the country. This sandwich, noted for its ultra-creamy egg salad made with cage-free eggs and umami-rich Kewpie mayonnaise, has become a sensation in Japanese convenience stores, being affectionately described by the late Anthony Bourdain as 'pillows of love.'

The Canadian adaptation of the tamago sando was developed by 7-Eleven's executive chef, Benny Cheng, who ensured that the recipe uses authentic ingredients that mirror those found in Japan. The sandwich will be priced at $5 and features soft, crustless milk bread, called shokupan, which contributes to its signature texture and taste. This offering highlights the growing trend of international cuisine making its way to the Canadian market, specifically through the convenience store sector.

The introduction of the tamago sando not only promotes cultural exchange but also reflects changing consumer preferences in Canada, where there is a rising demand for unique and convenient food options. The sandwich's arrival could potentially influence other convenience stores to consider incorporating similar international items that resonate with multicultural demographics, making it a noteworthy development in the Canadian fast-food landscape.
