South Africa: Survivors Call for Probe Into Deadly Limpopo Bus Crash

Survivors of a bus crash in Limpopo, South Africa, which resulted in five fatalities, are calling for an investigation into the incident and the circumstances of many accidents occurring at the same location.

A tragic bus accident near Ingwe Lodge outside Louis Trichardt, Limpopo, resulted in five deaths and numerous injuries, echoing a previous incident where 44 lives were lost at the same site. The bus, en route from Johannesburg to Zimbabwe, appeared to be overloaded at the time of the crash. Survivors have expressed their distress and are urging authorities to take immediate action to prevent further tragedies.

Transport MEC Violet Mathye confirmed that four individuals died at the scene, while a fifth succumbed to injuries later in a hospital. There are calls for an investigation into the bus company involved, with survivors demanding accountability and questioning safety measures. Mathye emphasized the need for structural changes at the accident site, suggesting that a barrier be built to protect vehicles from plunging into ditches during accidents.

Former passengers of the bus, including Richman Garwi from Harare, recounted the harrowing moment the driver alerted everyone about brake failure, leading to panic among the passengers. These incidents have raised concerns regarding bus safety regulations and the need for improvements in infrastructure to ensure passenger safety, especially on routes known for previous accidents.
