Two dropped from the competition - Finnish women isolated
Two Finnish cross-country skiers have fallen ill and were isolated from the rest of their team ahead of a key competition.
Finnish cross-country skiers Vilma Ryytty and Vilma Nissinen have been isolated from their team due to illness, confirmed by the women's national team coach, Reijo Jylhä. The illness reported is a nasal congestion without a fever, necessitating their separation from the group for safety. As a result, the Finnish women's team will compete in the upcoming 50-kilometer event with only three athletes instead of the usual representation.
The competition set for Sunday will feature Kerttu Niskanen, Johanna Matintalo, and Krista Pärmäkoski as the remaining Finnish representatives. Coach Jylhä assured that the Niskanen siblings, Kerttu and Iivo, are healthy, living in individual accommodations. Pärmäkoski, who was previously sent back to Italy, has now rejoined the team to fill the vacancy in the senior women's event that opened up.
Meanwhile, the men's race is scheduled for Saturday, where Iivo Niskanen, along with Arsi Ruuskanen, Ristomatti Hakola, and Lauri Vuorinen, will represent Finland. The situation emphasizes the challenges teams face in maintaining health and safety protocols during competitive seasons, particularly in sports like cross-country skiing, where the physical demands are high and the environment can aggravate illness transmission among athletes.
