Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda affirmed Germany's commitment to deploying a brigade in Lithuania until the end of 2027, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure for the troops.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has confirmed that Germany will deploy a brigade in Lithuania by the end of 2027, dismissing concerns and reaffirming the German Chancellor and Defense Minister's strong commitment to this deployment. Nausėda stated that Lithuania must focus on creating adequate infrastructure to support German forces, and indicated that the country is making progress ahead of schedule in this regard.
Nausėda recalled a memorandum signed with former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in 2022 regarding the brigades dislocation, expressing his satisfaction with Germany's ongoing political commitment, which remains steadfast even with changes in government. This underlines a strong bilateral relationship grounded in mutual defense commitments and cooperation between the two nations.
Furthermore, the President’s statements are significant in the context of regional security dynamics, as the presence of German troops in Lithuania is seen as a vital deterrent in the face of increasing tensions in Eastern Europe. This collaboration not only enhances Lithuania's defense capabilities but also strengthens NATO's Eastern Flank, highlighting the importance of allied presence in the region.
