Edomex Gives Two More Years of Validity than CDMX on Vehicle Registration Card

The State of Mexico offers a five-year validity for vehicle registration cards, which is two years longer than Mexico City, where the document must be renewed every three years.

The State of Mexico has implemented a policy allowing vehicle registration cards to have a validity of five years, compared to the three-year validity in Mexico City. This change aims to simplify the renewal process for vehicle owners and ease the administrative burden placed on drivers in the region. In Mexico State, the vehicle registration card's validity is closely linked to the license plates, which also last for five years from the date of issuance.

This policy is complemented by an incentive program for vehicle owners who need to renew their plates after five years. The state government has initiated a plan that allows individuals with vehicles registered in 2021 and outstanding debts to benefit from a 100 percent waiver on certain fees, including ownership tax, renewal fees, and related costs due for 2024 and previous years. For vehicles with plates from 2020 and before, there is also a complete waiver for taxes and fees from 2021 to 2023, making it financially advantageous for owners to update their license plates and stay compliant.

This move not only alleviates the financial burden on vehicle owners but also encourages the regular updating of vehicle documentation, potentially leading to increased compliance and better regulation of vehicles on the roads. As the State of Mexico continues to develop its infrastructure and regulations, such initiatives may contribute positively to the overall management of vehicular documentation and the transportation system in the region.
