In the form of a pig and a threat to kill the 'Muslim race'... A threat message to Australia's largest mosque
Australian police are investigating a threatening message sent to Lakemba Mosque, the largest mosque in Australia, containing a pig image and a threat to the Muslim community.
Australian police have launched an investigation following a distressing threat directed at Lakemba Mosque, the largest mosque in Australia. The message, received on Wednesday, featured an image of a pig along with a threatening statement that alluded to killing the 'Muslim race.' This incident marks the third such occurrence leading up to Ramadan, raising further concerns within the community. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the series of threats, highlighting the alarming nature of these attacks against religious institutions.
The troubling message comes a few weeks after another similar letter was sent to the mosque, which included an image of Muslims inside a burning mosque, escalating fears within the community regarding their safety. Australian authorities responded swiftly, arresting a 70-year-old man in January for a previous threatening communication directed at the mosque staff, illustrating the ongoing issue of anti-Muslim sentiment in the country.
In response to these threats, police have increased patrols at places of worship, including Lakemba Mosque, to reassure the community and prevent any further incidents. The Lebanese Islamic Association, which manages the mosque, expressed concerns over safety and has reached out to the government for additional funding to implement security measures such as hiring guards and installing surveillance cameras, indicating an urgent need for protection amidst rising tensions.
