South African car exports hit record high
South African car exports reached a record high in 2025, marking a 5.9% increase from the previous year, despite challenges presented by tariffs in key markets.
In 2025, South Africa achieved a milestone in vehicle exports, with figures reaching 414,268 units, which is a 5.9% increase from the 391,128 units exported in 2024. This comprehensive report from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) highlights the resilience of the automotive sector amidst varying global trade challenges.
The export growth was notable across 109 global markets, demonstrating strong international demand. While American tariffs posed a significant challenge, drastically reducing exports to the US from 25,554 units in 2024 to just 6,530 units in 2025, this decrease was largely compensated for by a substantial rise in shipments to Europe. Exports to the European Union and the UK jumped from 295,762 to 332,695 units, indicating a shift in market strategy and the ability of South African producers to adapt to changing trade dynamics.
This record high in vehicle exports underscores the importance of the automotive industry to South Africa's economy, particularly in light of global protectionist measures. The ability to navigate these challenges suggests a promising future for local producers, and highlights South Africa's growing role in the international automotive market, with significant opportunities for further expansion, especially in European markets.
