In Bihar, the denial of leave to a teacher for her daughter's wedding has sparked a debate in the Legislative Council, bringing to light the stringent regulations governing leave in schools under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC-ST) welfare department. Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Sanjeev Kumar raised the issue, pointing out that the rules are overly complicated and pose difficulties for teachers who need time off. According to him, teachers often must seek permission from the directorate rather than their local principals, making the process cumbersome and frustrating. This situation has led to the teacher involved facing unnecessary hurdles in obtaining the leave required for such an important personal event.

The MLC's comments drew significant attention from other council members, who raised objections to the existing policy. JDU member Neeraj Kumar described the leave rules as the "eighth wonder of the world," highlighting how impractical they are for teachers who are already engaged in their professional duties. He further questioned why the principal is not given the authority to grant leave directly, as teachers should not have to endure excessive bureaucratic processes while trying to manage their personal lives alongside their professional responsibilities.

The gravity of the situation was underscored by the chairperson, Avadhesh Narayan Singh, who made a pointed remark about the extreme measures taken in military and police contexts when personnel are denied leave.
