Zero capital release for NDLEA threatens Nigeria’s security — Group

A Nigerian advocacy group has criticized the lack of funding for the NDLEA, warning it could jeopardize national security.

The Society for Drug Abuse Enlightenment and Control (SODAEC), based in Nigeria, has released a statement condemning the non-release of capital funds to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for 2025. Ahmad Umar, the Executive Director of SODAEC, emphasized that this financial neglect, revealed through discussions in the National Assembly Joint Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, poses a significant threat to national security. He characterized the situation as a "calculated abandonment" of the country's essential defenses against drug-related issues and insecurity.

Umar pointed out that while the NDLEA has succeeded in numerous operations, including notable drug seizures and destruction of cannabis farms under the leadership of Mohammed Marwa, the agency's ability to carry on such successful activities is curtailed by the lack of capital support. He argued that without the necessary funding, the agency cannot sustain its ongoing efforts, risking a deterioration of its impact and the potential resurgence of narcotics issues in Nigeria.

The call to action by SODAEC underscores the vital role the NDLEA plays in ensuring national security by combating drug abuse and trafficking. The funding crisis could not only undermine current achievements but also signal a troubling trend in the government's commitment to addressing drug-related challenges, which have broader implications for public safety and health across the nation.
