A child was shot during a violent confrontation between rival factions in Catumbi, Rio de Janeiro.

On the evening of Wednesday (18), a child was shot amid a fierce gun battle between rival criminal factions in the Praça da Clínica da Família Medalhista Olímpico Ricardo Lucarelli, located in Catumbi, Central Rio de Janeiro. The gunfire erupted near Rua Frei Caneca, between the streets Neco do Estácio and Alcebíades Barcelos, highlighting the ongoing violence that plagues certain neighborhoods in the city.

Witnesses reported that members of the Morro do Fallet, affiliated with the Comando Vermelho faction, launched an attack into the area named "Predinhos" within the Mineira community, which is under the control of the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP). Two assailants reportedly arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on members of a rival group before fleeing the scene. This incident raises concerns about the safety of civilians in an area frequently impacted by violent drug-related crime.

The chaotic scene was captured in images showing the marketplace in the square where people had set up stalls, suddenly disrupted by armed men racing through and shooting. In frantic attempts to escape the gunfire, a woman was seen hurriedly pushing a baby stroller. This tragic event underscores the dire need for improved security and intervention in neighborhoods grappling with gang violence in Brazil.
