Cyberbullying is growing at an incredible speed - explained why it is becoming increasingly difficult to control it

The report highlights a staggering increase in cyberbullying incidents in Lithuania, rising over three times in just one year.

Recent statistics reveal a troubling surge in the prevalence of cyberbullying in Lithuania, with reports increasing by 62% compared to 2024. The National Communications Regulatory Authority (RRT) has expressed particular concern over the rapid escalation of online harassment, which has tripled within a year and fivefold over three years. Experts suggest that the growth is not merely due to children spending more time online; rather, it is exacerbated by the complexities of the digital environment.

RRT representatives have noted that cyberbullying increasingly occurs in closed groups and niche platforms where content is not public, making it challenging to address. This shift complicates the process of investigating cases, as they can only take action when they can witness and assess the original content. Justina Paulauskaitė, the head of the RRT's Digital Space Monitoring Group, emphasized that the nature of digital interactions demands more intricate solutions and greater vigilance from both authorities and the community.

The data illustrates that last year, RRT received 186 reports related to cyberbullying, of which 143 were confirmed, contrasting sharply with only 47 confirmed cases in 2024 and just 27 in 2023. This alarming trend underscores the urgent need for effective measures to combat cyberbullying and highlights the necessity for ongoing awareness and education regarding safe online practices.
