Delhi AI summit marred by Indian university’s claim to Chinese robot

The Delhi AI summit faced controversy after an Indian university inadvertently claimed a Chinese robot as its own creation.

The global artificial intelligence summit held in New Delhi encountered significant controversy when a professor from Galgotias University claimed that the institution had developed a robot, a mechanized dog, which was actually identified as a commercially available product from China's Unitree Robotics. This statement was made during a broadcast by the state-backed news outlet DD News and quickly prompted backlash from online users.

In response to the uproar, Galgotias University issued a clarification, explaining that the professor's remarks stemmed from a misunderstanding and stating that their representative at the summit was not informed about the robot's actual origins. The university expressed regret over the incident, stating that the representative, in her excitement to engage with the media, had provided inaccurate information without proper authority to address the press. Consequently, the university's pavilion was reportedly taken down amid the fallout from the incident.

This episode highlights the challenges of authenticity and accountability in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence, especially within a locally-hosted international summit. It raises concerns not only about the credibility of participants at such forums but also about the broader implications of misrepresentation in technology, which could potentially undermine trust in innovations and partnerships between nations.
