Illa reaches a Budget agreement with the 'comunes' but still needs ERC's support to approve it

Salvador Illa's government has secured a budget agreement with the 'comunes', but will need support from ERC for final approval in the Parliament.

The government led by socialist Salvador Illa has successfully reached a budget agreement with the 'comunes' party to facilitate the approval of the Generalitat's annual budgets. This agreement follows the fulfillment of several demands from the 'comunes', including the introduction of penalties for property owners who fail to comply with rental price limits set by the Housing Law, effectively addressing housing affordability issues. Additionally, this coalition looks to mitigate speculative property purchases to help stabilize the housing market in Catalonia.

Beyond the budget deal, recent negotiations between the government and the 'comunes' have resulted in new commitments, including an agreement for the Generalitat to take over specific suburban railway lines—R1, R2 South, R3, R4 North, and R16—that are crucial for improving short-distance rail services in Catalonia. This transfer aims to enhance the region's connectivity and tackle ongoing crises faced by the public transport system.

Despite these advances, the agreement remains contingent on garnering the necessary support from ERC (Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya), a critical player in Catalan politics. The PSC's need for ERC's backing illustrates the delicate balance of power and negotiation within the Catalan Parliament, emphasizing the complexities of coalition governance as various parties align or confront each other on key issues.
