On Wednesday evening, the police in Helsinki received an emergency call about a man with an axe seen at the Tripla shopping center in Pasila. The call came in around 10:20 PM, prompting several police units to be dispatched to the scene to handle the situation.

Upon arrival, the police identified a man matching the description given in the report and took him into custody. During the apprehension, officers discovered that he was carrying a knife and had a travel axe in his vehicle. Fortunately, at this time, authorities do not believe that the man was threatening anyone, which has alleviated some concerns surrounding the incident. The individual is, however, suspected of possessing items suitable for causing serious harm.

Additionally, police emphasized the seriousness of the legislation regarding carrying dangerous objects in public places, which has been tightened since the beginning of 2026. Crime Commissioner Niki Västinsalo expressed the department's commitment to enhancing public safety through active measures to mitigate the risks associated with weapons in public areas, indicating a proactive stance in maintaining community safety and addressing concerns about knife and weapon carriage in public spaces.
