Yle's commentator wore leather pants – then things started to happen
Yle commentator Kimmo Porttila believes he possesses magical leather pants which he wore during competitions, linked to significant victories by Finnish athletes.
Kimmo Porttila, a commentator for Yle, has discovered what he describes as a magical piece of clothing: his leather pants. He purchased these pants during the 2021 World Championships in Oberstdorf, where he visited a local leather workshop that handcrafts them. The best pants, made from moose leather, require up to 80 hours of work and can last for three generations, while Porttila's are made from roe deer leather.
Porttila first donned the leather pants during a significant moment when Finnish athlete Ilkka Herola won a silver medal at the 2021 competition. Reflecting on the coincidence, he and his colleagues joked about the possibility of the pants being magical. Since then, he has worn them occasionally, but never during a combined event. However, at the recent Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, he decided to wear the pants before the men's small hill combined event, leading to Eero Hirvonen’s victory.
The anecdote highlights the light-hearted connection athletes and commentators often have with their attire during competitions. Porttila’s story not only brings a fun narrative to the Olympics but also emphasizes the cultural significance of handcrafted products in Finland, showcasing traditional craftsmanship and its relation to modern sports events.
