Significant Avalanche Danger in Jotunheimen
There is a significant avalanche danger in Jotunheimen that will last through Thursday and Friday due to unstable layers beneath new snowfall.
The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has issued an orange danger warning for avalanches in Jotunheimen, signaling a significant avalanche threat due to persistent weak layers under the new snowfall. This warning will remain in effect on Thursday and Friday. From Friday, avalanche danger will also rise from yellow to orange level in Indre Sogn.
In Trollheimen, the avalanche risk is at a yellow level, indicating a moderate avalanche danger. This caution suggests that while conditions are not as severe, precautions are still necessary for those exploring mountainous terrains. Furthermore, as one moves further north in the country, the avalanche risk will escalate to a red level from Friday, indicating a high level of danger.
Given the significant avalanche threat, authorities are advising the public to avoid terrains steeper than 30 degrees and to stay clear of avalanche-prone areas. This precaution is critical for safety, particularly for those engaging in winter sports and outdoor activities in these regions during this dangerous period.
