Inga Ruginienė: There Are No Hidden Agendas Regarding the LRT, We Want to Strengthen Democracy

Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė states that the government's intent regarding the national broadcaster LRT is to enhance democracy and freedom, not to serve any hidden agendas.

Inga Ruginienė, the Lithuanian Prime Minister, spoke on Žinių radijas about the government's intentions concerning the Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT). She emphasized that there are no hidden agendas, asserting that the goal is to increase democracy, freedom, and opportunities for journalists. This statement comes as a working group in the Seimas (Lithuanian Parliament) concludes its work on reforming the governance of LRT, with proposals expected to be presented to Parliament next week.

The working group has reached a consensus on several key proposals, including the establishment of a new supervisory board for the national broadcaster, which is set to increase the number of council members from 12 to 15. Additionally, a supporting office for this board is to be created. Another significant change proposed is the limitation on the terms of the LRT general director, while maintaining the existing two-thirds majority requirement for the dismissal of the director based on a vote of no confidence, a safeguard aimed at ensuring accountability and stability in the leadership of LRT.

Some dissent has emerged from the media community, particularly from Birutė Davidonytė, the head of the Journalists' Professional Association, who opted not to participate in the working group. She expressed concerns on Facebook that the proposed changes are "much worse than the original proposals" put forward by the ruling party regarding the dismissal of the LRT director. These developments highlight the ongoing tension between government oversight and media independence in Lithuania, as stakeholders navigate the balance between regulation and freedom in the media sector.
