Energy, decree of 5 billion approved. Bills down for families and businesses

The Italian government has approved a 5 billion euro energy decree aimed at reducing utility costs for families and businesses.

The Italian government has recently implemented a significant energy decree allocating over 5 billion euros in resources and benefits to alleviate utility bills for families and businesses. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni highlighted the government’s commitment to easing the financial burden on citizens and companies as a central objective of the initiative. The decree is administered by the Minister of Environment, Pichetto, and addresses the needs of the most vulnerable households by introducing an extraordinary contribution of 115 euros in 2026 for recipients of the electric social bonus, raising total annual support to 315 euros.

For middle-income households with an ISEE of up to 25,000 euros, the decree establishes a mechanism allowing voluntary bill discounts from suppliers, aiming to further lighten their financial obligations. On the business front, measures focus on reducing general system charges, specifically for non-domestic users, alongside cutting transportation and distribution costs of gas for companies. These interventions are part of a broader strategy to enhance energy affordability, particularly in light of rising utility costs that have affected many sectors.

The financing of this substantial initiative is supported by an increase of two points in the Irap tax for energy companies, reflecting efforts to balance fiscal responsibilities with the need to support the economy during a challenging period. Overall, the decree represents a substantial governmental effort to implement, enhance, and sustain measures aimed at protecting both vulnerable populations and the economic viability of businesses in Italy against the backdrop of rising energy costs.
