Uganda: Bobi Calls for Prayers for Political Prisoners As Lent and Ramadan Begin
Bobi Wine has called on Ugandans to dedicate the Lenten season to prayers for political prisoners and those in need.
Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, known as Bobi Wine and a leading figure in Uganda’s opposition, has called for a dedicated period of prayer and reflection as the Lenten season coincides with Ramadan. He emphasized the importance of this time in supporting political prisoners and vulnerable groups in Uganda, referencing Pope John Paul II’s teachings on the significance of prayer and fasting. Bobi Wine's message also serves to draw attention to the plight of those who are suffering, especially those unjustly detained or exiled.
In his message posted on social media, Kyagulanyi urged believers to extend their prayers and kindness to various groups including political prisoners, the forcibly disappeared, orphans, and exiles, highlighting the growing need for solidarity among Ugandans during this spiritually significant season. The image he shared included notable figures from his National Unity Platform, emphasizing both personal connection and political solidarity.
Bobi Wine’s call to action reflects the ongoing political tensions in Uganda, bringing to light issues surrounding human rights and the treatment of opposition members in the country. His emphasis on prayer during Lent serves as both a religious observance and a rallying point for advocacy, potentially galvanizing support for those suffering in the political context as the nation observes significant religious events.
