Burkina Faso: several dozen deaths in a new jihadist attack near Fada N'Gourma

A new jihadist attack in eastern Burkina Faso resulted in between 60 and 70 deaths, targeting a base of the combat units responsible for water and forest protection.

On February 14, a violent jihadist attack occurred in the region of Fada N'Gourma, east of Burkina Faso, claiming the lives of between 60 and 70 individuals. This assault specifically targeted the base of the UnitΓ©s combattantes des eaux et forΓͺts (Ucef), which houses soldiers designed to protect natural resources and prevent terrorism. The soldiers were reportedly trapped in their trenches while facing the attack despite being alerted to the imminent threat.

Sources indicate that the Ucef troops had requested reinforcements from the nearest rapid intervention unit, the BIR 12, when they received intelligence about the impending jihadist assault. The military confirmed the dispatch of support forces to the location, showing an effort to address the rising threat posed by jihadist groups in the region that have sought to instigate fear and cause significant casualties among security forces.

This tragic event underscores the ongoing instability and violence that has plagued Burkina Faso for years, as jihadist groups intensify their operations and target military installations. It raises concerns about the ability of local and national forces to secure the region and protect communities, highlighting a critical situation that may require increased international support and strategic military assistance.
