China’s Dominance in the Sea is Rapidly Increasing... Leaving the US Behind in Submarine Production
China has surpassed the US in building nuclear submarines, leading to new debates over maritime power dynamics.
The race for dominance at sea has reached a new turning point as China has significantly accelerated its construction of nuclear-powered submarines, effectively outpacing the United States. A recent report by a think tank, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), claims that between 2021 and 2025, China launched more submarines than the US, raising concerns about the shifting balance of maritime power. This shift signals a potential challenge to decades of uncontested maritime superiority held by Washington.
According to the IISS report, during the specified period, China launched a total of ten nuclear submarines, while the US managed to launch only seven. Not only has China increased the number of subs, but it has also surpassed the US in terms of weight, with Chinese submarines weighing a total of 79,000 tons compared to the US's 55,500 tons. This marks a significant shift from the previous five years (2016-2020), when China only added three submarines, weighing 23,000 tons, compared to seven submarines added by the US weighing 55,500 tons.
The implications of China's advancements in submarine production are profound, as they stir debates about maritime security and power dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. This development raises questions about the future of US naval operations and its strategic partnerships, as well as the stability of the regional maritime order. Such a shift may lead to increased tensions and a reevaluation of military strategies by nations closely observing China’s growing naval capabilities.
