Oaxaca is the most affected entity by forest fires in 2026 so far
Oaxaca has recorded the highest number of forest fire damages in 2026, with over 2,577 hectares affected.
As of early 2026, Oaxaca has established itself as the most severely impacted state in Mexico by forest fires, with 2,577.45 hectares reported as burned. The National Forestry Commission (Conafor) reported that between January 1 and February 12, there were a total of 36 recorded fires in the region consuming various types of vegetation, including 1,059 hectares of grassy surface, 384.73 hectares of shrubland, and 129.89 hectares of young trees. Additionally, damage was reported for 3.34 hectares of adult trees and 999.8 hectares of leaf litter.
While Oaxaca leads in the total area affected by fires, it also surpasses Chiapas, which has seen 1,787 hectares scorched across 14 incidents, and Aguascalientes, which has experienced 945.71 hectares affected due to 10 fires. The statistics underscore the urgent need for fire management and preventive measures in these regions, especially as fire incidents begin to peak at the start of 2026.
Moreover, the report highlighted the number of recorded fires in different states at the beginning of this year. The State of Mexico reported the highest incidents with a total of 55, followed by Jalisco with 48, Morelos with 44, MichoacΓ‘n with 41, and Oaxaca with 36. This data emphasizes the widespread challenge of forest fires affecting multiple states and the importance of comprehensive firefighting strategies and policies to mitigate future risks.
