Vilage no Samba is the champion of the Special Group and Globo de Ouro wins Series A at the Carnival of Nova Friburgo
Vilage no Samba won the Special Group title and Globo de Ouro secured the Series A title during the Carnival of Nova Friburgo 2026.
At the 2026 Carnival of Nova Friburgo, Vilage no Samba was crowned champion of the Special Group, amassing a total of 179.9 points after its performance on Sunday, which marked its 30th title win. The victory was narrowly clinched with a mere one-tenth point lead over Unidos da Saudade, which scored 179.8 points. This year's event showcased the rich heritage of samba schools and highlighted the vibrant competitiveness within Brazil's carnival culture.
Additionally, Globo de Ouro triumphed in the Series A category with a score of 269.6 points, marking their fourth consecutive championship and their 17th overall. The school's performance featured an afro-religious theme, focusing on the terreiro Ilê Oxumarê from Salvador, which further emphasizes the integration of cultural and religious narratives into samba performances, resonating deeply with the cultural identity of Brazil.
The announcement of scores this year took place at the Oficina Escola de Artes in Nova Friburgo, deviating from the traditional venue at Estádio Eduardo Guinle, which typically allowed public attendance. The change to a more restricted environment was made at the recommendation of the Military Police and the local government, underlining ongoing concerns regarding public safety during large gatherings such as carnival celebrations, and hints at a shifting approach to event management in light of contemporary challenges.
