Deutsche Welle closes its Greek language service – Massive cutbacks
Deutsche Welle has announced the closure of its Greek language service as part of broader budget cuts affecting various language journalism.
Deutsche Welle (DW), the German international broadcaster, has decided to shut down its Greek service amid significant budget cuts owing to reduced federal funding for 2026. This closure is part of a comprehensive plan to achieve savings of €21 million, which also includes reductions in programming in other languages, including German. The fiscal constraints necessitated a joint meeting of DW's Radio and Television Council, Board of Directors, and management team to address the budgetary shortfalls and strategize further reductions.
The decision to eliminate the Greek service will not only reduce the diversity of DW's journalistic offerings but will also impact the employment of around 160 full-time positions across the organization. The plan encompasses the merging of German-language content with German language courses, further indicating a shift in DW's focus and its role in international journalism. The cuts are significant not only for the affected employees but also for the Greek-speaking audience who rely on DW for news and information.
This move by Deutsche Welle raises concerns about the decreasing availability of foreign journalism in various languages, particularly in a global media landscape where multilingual services are increasingly vital for providing diverse perspectives. The decision reflects broader trends in media organizations responding to financial pressures, and it highlights the ongoing challenges in sustaining comprehensive international media coverage.
