Rio hotels set record with 99% occupancy during Carnival

Rio de Janeiro hotels achieved a remarkable 99% occupancy rate during the 2026 Carnival, surpassing the previous year's figures.

The 2026 Carnival in Rio de Janeiro was a significant success as the city welcomed a massive influx of tourists, leading to record-breaking occupancy rates in local hotels. According to a survey conducted by the Rio de Janeiro Hotels and Lodging Union (HotéisRIO), the overall average occupancy rate in the city reached an impressive 99.02%, marking an increase from the previous year's rate of 98.62%. This surge in visitors reflects the city's growing reputation as a major tourist destination during the Carnival season.

The highest occupancy rates were recorded in the South Zone of Rio, particularly in the areas between Glória and Botafogo, encompassing Flamengo, Catete, Santa Teresa, and Laranjeiras, where the occupancy reached an astounding 99.89%. Not far behind, the neighborhoods of Ipanema and Leblon boasted a remarkable 99.75% occupancy rate. The city's downtown area followed closely with a rate of 99.47%, just slightly higher than Leme and Copacabana at 99.46%. Meanwhile, Barra, Recreio, and São Conrado recorded the lowest occupancy among the zones, at 97.98%.

The high hotel occupancy rates during Carnival are indicative of the vibrant and festive atmosphere that characterizes this season in Rio de Janeiro. The event not only highlights the city's capacity for handling large crowds but also underscores the importance of Carnival to the local economy, particularly in terms of tourism and hospitality. The success in 2026 suggests a positive trend for future Carnivals, as well as a robust growth opportunity for the hospitality sector in Brazil.
