AI will not kill jobs but create more — Experts
Experts claim that artificial intelligence will create more jobs than it eliminates, as discussed during the AI Awareness Day in Abuja.
The National Association of Artificial Intelligence Practitioners (NAAIP) recently addressed concerns over the potential negative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on employment in Nigeria. During the 2026 AI Awareness Day in Abuja, experts emphasized that rather than causing significant job losses, AI technology is expected to generate new employment opportunities for Nigerians. They highlighted the need for the country to evolve from merely consuming foreign AI tools to developing its own indigenous solutions that respond to local needs.
Prof Peter Okebukola, the founder of NAAIP, along with the association's President Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede, pointed out that fears surrounding AI and unemployment are unwarranted. They likened the current situation to the transition from typewriters to computers, where technological advancements initially caused anxiety but ultimately led to job creation rather than losses. The leaders called for Nigerians to adapt and embrace AI advancements, asserting that those who fail to do so risk becoming unemployed.
The discussion at the event underscored the importance of education and skill development in preparing the workforce for a future where AI plays a significant role. By focusing on developing local expertise and solutions in AI, Nigeria aims to position itself as a key player in the global technology landscape and mitigate fears of job loss due to AI advancements.
