At least three died in avalanches in Austria

At least three people have died due to avalanches in the Austrian Alps, according to local authorities.

On Wednesday, local authorities reported that at least three individuals died in separate avalanche incidents across the Austrian Alps. The fatalities included a 71-year-old man in Fiss, Tyrol, and a 44-year-old German skier in Navis. Additionally, a skier lost their life in Vorarlberg due to another avalanche. Earlier in the week, two snowboarders also died in the Stubai region of Tyrol after skiing outside of marked trails. This winter has seen a concerning increase in avalanche-related fatalities in the Alps, attributed to heavy snowfall experienced in early winter, leading to heightened avalanche risks. In early February, two Finnish freeriders also succumbed to an avalanche in South Tyrol in northern Italy, emphasizing the broader regional risks associated with mountain skiing and snowboarding activity.
