Illegal dump to finally close after lorry tipping out waste gets stuck in mud

An illegal dump near the M25 outside Epping will be closed following a court ruling due to health and safety concerns.

The Environment Agency has taken significant steps to close a large-scale illegal dump next to the M25, following its designation as a health hazard. The site, which measures 300 meters long, has been a cause for concern due to the potential risks it poses to human health and fire hazards. The closure will take effect on Thursday, restricting access to only emergency services, utility workers, and Environment Agency personnel.

This decision comes after the Barkingside Magistrates Court found sufficient grounds to impose a restriction order against the dump's owner, Patrick Culligan. In his defense, Culligan claimed via email that he is not responsible for the illegal dumping that has occurred on the site, although he did not contest the order imposed by the court. However, Land Registry records indicate that he has owned the land since 2003, raising questions about his claims.

The closure of this illegal dump highlights ongoing issues with waste management and illegal dumping in the UK. By enforcing such restriction orders, the Environment Agency aims to mitigate the public health risks associated with these sites, seeking to ensure safe and compliant waste disposal methods, which is increasingly critical amid growing environmental concerns.
