A 60-year-old man was injured after falling into an unmarked hole created by Sabesp in Franca, SP.
A motorcycle accident occurred in Franca, SP, when a 60-year-old man fell into a hole left by the Basic Sanitation Company of São Paulo (Sabesp). The incident happened on the evening of Tuesday, October 17, around 5:30 PM in Jardim Boa Esperança. Footage from a security camera captured the moment the motorcyclist was riding along Dr. Washington Luís street and unexpectedly encountered the unmarked pit, covered by rainwater, leading him to lose control and crash, hitting his head hard against the ground. His helmet was thrown several meters away from the impact.
Emergency services responded quickly, and the man lost consciousness but was taken to Santa Casa de Franca by the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu). Local residents reported that the hole had been created for ongoing works by Sabesp, but there was no proper signage to alert drivers of the danger. Following the incident, Sabesp issued a statement expressing sorrow over the event, clarified that they learned of the incident only on the following Wednesday, and stated that a team was sent to the hospital to provide assistance and assess the situation.
The event raises concerns regarding public safety and accountability of utility companies in Brazil, particularly emphasizing the importance of adequate warnings and signposting at construction sites to prevent similar incidents. As reports of accidents involving infrastructure shortcomings become increasingly common, this case may lead to public outcry for better oversight and practices to ensure motorist safety in urban areas affected by construction projects, sparking a conversation about the responsibilities of local governments and companies involved in public works and maintenance.
