Estonian public media will not broadcast competitions with Russian and Belarusian Paralympians

Estonian public broadcaster ERR will not air the Milan and Cortina Paralympic Games where Russian and Belarusian athletes will compete under their flags.

Estonian public broadcaster ERR announced that they will not air the upcoming Milan and Cortina Paralympic Games in March, where athletes from Russia and Belarus will participate under their national flags. This decision aligns with ERR's stance against the normalization of actions taken by aggressor states, particularly in the realm of sports and the Olympic movement. ERR’s sports editor Rivo Sārna emphasized the organization's clear condemnation of the inclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes in these events, considering it a troubling normalization of the aggressors' actions.

Despite not broadcasting the competitions, ERR plans to cover important ceremonies associated with the Paralympic Games, including the opening and closing ceremonies. During these broadcasts, viewers will be provided with updates regarding the decisions made by international sports organizations, as well as context surrounding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes. This highlights the broadcaster’s intent to maintain transparency and inform the public of the broader implications of these events related to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The European Broadcasting Union is reportedly discussing possible responses to the live coverage of these ceremonies. As this situation evolves, ERR's decisions may set precedence for how other broadcasters in Europe handle the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes, particularly in light of the current international stance against these countries following their actions in geopolitical conflicts. This reflects a growing trend in the sports community to reassess participation norms in light of political circumstances.
