After the Olympic success – here children try curling in Vänersborg
Children in Vänersborg are trying curling for the first time after Sweden's success in the sport at the Olympics, sparking a surge of interest among local youth.
Following Sweden's notable achievements in curling at the recent Olympics, a significant increase in interest for the sport has been observed among children in Vänersborg. On a Monday morning, the Vänersborg Curling Club organized a special event where around 60 children, along with their parents, came to try curling for themselves. Young participants like 8-year-old Matteo Wall Jashari expressed excitement about the sport, highlighting that watching it on TV inspired them to want to give it a go.
The event was met with enthusiasm from both the kids and the club's officials. Many parents and children filled the ice hall, where they engaged in sliding the curling stones, sweeping, and attempting to maintain their balance on the slippery surface. Amelia Master Östlund, a 12-year-old participant, noted that while it was fun, she felt like a beginner. The club's president, Mattias West, reported that the turnout was significantly higher than last year's similar event, showcasing the growing popularity of curling among the younger generation.
West expressed hopes that this event could lead to new memberships in the curling club, emphasizing the fun of sliding on the ice and the unique experience of playing curling itself. The buzz from the community reflects a positive trend that may develop the sport further in the region, especially with a younger demographic becoming more involved. The increase in participation could potentially lead to a more sustained interest in curling, building on the momentum generated by Sweden's recent Olympic triumphs in the sport.
