STT lays off 13 employees

STT has announced the layoff of 13 employees following the conclusion of its restructuring negotiations.

STT, a Finnish news agency, has reported its decision to lay off 13 employees as part of its restructuring measures. This announcement comes after a series of negotiations that concluded on February 5, 2023. In total, 21 positions are being reduced, as eight others will remain unfilled due to various other reasons, with seven of those affecting reporters and photojournalists in the newsroom. The layoffs are part of a broader strategy to streamline operations and address financial constraints.

In addition to the layoffs, STT has indicated that there will be significant changes to the essential terms of employment for a "considerable number" of employees. This will include alterations such as reduced working hours and changes to job roles. Specifically, according to the report, ten of the layoffs and seven reductions in working hours will affect newsroom staff, while the remaining changes will apply to other functions within STT. This restructuring reflects ongoing challenges within the media industry and the need for news agencies to adapt to changing market conditions.

The restructuring discussions at STT started in December and have continued with additional negotiations specifically concerning the agency's moderation services, which were initiated at the end of January. These discussions are projected to involve additional workforce reductions, with an estimated need for up to six full-time positions to be eliminated. STT's CEO, Kimmo Laaksonen, has commented on the dire financial situation and emphasized the need for these changes to ensure the agency's survival and competitiveness in the evolving media landscape.
