The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had communicated its objections citing Olympic Charter rule 50, which prohibits political statements. Despite the IOC's last-ditch attempt to persuade him to remove the helmet, Heraskevych remained steadfast, resulting in his disqualification shortly before the competition commenced.
