Intense traffic on some avenues in Guayaquil due to rain
Heavy rainfall in Guayaquil has caused flooding and intense traffic congestion on several major avenues.
On Wednesday, a significant downpour hit Guayaquil, Ecuador, leading to severe disruptions across various sectors of the city. The heavy rains coincided with the highest tides of the year, reaching levels of 5 meters as reported by Interagua. This combination has resulted in flooded streets and considerable traffic congestion in key areas such as Américas and sections of Narcisa de Jesús avenues.
Interagua, the city's water utility, responded by deploying teams to clear clogged drainage systems, although several locations continued to feel the impact of the high tides. As the tide begins to recede, conditions are expected to improve; however, the immediate aftermath of the rain has left many streets submerged, aggravating the already challenging traffic situation during the morning commute.
The city's infrastructure is being tested by this weather event, raising concerns regarding stormwater management and urban planning in Guayaquil. The situation has prompted discussions around necessary improvements in the city's drainage systems to better handle such intense rainfall events in the future, as similar occurrences may become more frequent due to climate change.
