Storm off to slow start in Winnipeg
A winter storm is affecting Winnipeg and surrounding areas, bringing freezing rain and snow with warning advisories in place.
Winter weather has arrived in southern Manitoba, particularly impacting Winnipeg and its surrounding areas. According to Environment Canada meteorologist Chris Stammers, regions to the south and west of Winnipeg experienced significant freezing rain followed by snowfall overnight. These conditions have prompted warnings due to hazardous travel and poor visibility, with major highways reported as being partially or fully ice-covered.
Snow accumulations are anticipated to be substantial, especially in western Manitoba where totals could reach up to 30 centimeters. In Winnipeg, the forecast suggests lighter snowfall of around 5 to 10 centimeters, with the possibility of an additional accumulation on Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning. Meanwhile, a Yellow Snowfall Warning has been issued, indicating that residents should prepare for challenging travel conditions.
Authorities advise caution when driving and recommend checking Manitoba 511 for updates on highway conditions. Residents are also being informed about school cancellations and other disruptions due to the weather. As the storm unfolds, community members are urged to stay informed and prioritize safety during these adverse conditions.
