Metsküla School Wants to Continue as a Municipal School

Metsküla School aims to revert to municipal status following a ruling that invalidated previous school closure decisions in Lääneranna.

Metsküla School is seeking to regain its status as a municipal school after the Estonian Supreme Court ruled in November that previous decisions to close and reduce schools were invalid. This development comes as the local government in Lääneranna prepares to restore the status of several schools in the area. Opposition factions have, however, cautioned against rushing into changes without thorough consideration.

After the Lääneranna council elections in the fall, the newly formed coalition has taken an interest in restoring Metsküla School as a municipal institution while granting more independence to the schools in Koonga and Virtsu. Metsküla School has been in the spotlight as it continued its operations as a private school during the interim period, but the recent decision by the school’s parents signifies a shift back to the local educational system.

According to Tarvi Sits, the mayor of Lääneranna, the school’s parents have decided to renounce its private school status and return to being a municipal school. He emphasized that while the parents' council made this proposal, the school remains an important part of the local educational framework from the municipality's perspective, irrespective of its designation as a private or municipal entity.
