The Federal Capital Territory police have deployed personnel and imposed movement restrictions ahead of the February 21, 2026, local government elections in Abuja, Nigeria.
The police command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria has announced the deployment of personnel to ensure security during the upcoming Area council elections scheduled for February 21, 2026. As part of their security measures, a restriction of movement will be enforced across the FCT from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the election day, with some exemptions for essential services and election officials. This move aims to facilitate a safe and orderly conduct of the elections, ensuring that electoral processes are protected from potential disruptions.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has prepared for these elections by clearing candidates from 17 political parties to contest 68 elective positions, including six area council chairmanship seats and 62 councillorship positions throughout the territory. Approximately 1.68 million registered voters are eligible to participate in these important local government elections. Such elections are crucial as they serve as a platform for grassroots governance and local leadership representation.
The police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, emphasized the comprehensive operational order behind the deployment of personnel, indicating the command's commitment to maintaining peace during the elections. The proactive measures taken by law enforcement are seen as essential, given the importance of these elections in promoting democratic engagement at the local level and addressing the concerns of residents in the capital city.
