Parliament: The defense agreement with Brazil was ratified by the Plenary
The Greek Parliament has ratified a defense cooperation agreement with Brazil, supported by the ruling parties.
The Plenary of the Greek Parliament has ratified with a broad majority the defense cooperation agreement between Greece and Brazil. Significant political support for the bill came from the ruling New Democracy party and opposition parties including PASOK and SYRIZA, while the Communist Party (KKE) and the New Left voted against it. Other parties such as the Greek Solution, Niki, and Plefsi Eleftherias opted to be present without voting in favor or against.
The Deputy Minister of National Defense, Athanasios Davakis, highlighted that the passage of this bilateral defense agreement enhances Greece's international profile. He emphasized that the agreement, along with the forthcoming protocols, substantially strengthens Greece's position in the defense sector, especially in cooperation with Brazil, which has a distinct mark in the defense industry. The move is seen as a strategic enhancement of Greece's defense alliances and capabilities.
This agreement reflects Greece's ongoing efforts to bolster its defense posture amidst regional tensions and to foster international partnerships in defense matters. Aligning with Brazil expands Greece's strategic options and could influence its defense policies moving forward, providing access to new technologies and promoting joint military exercises, thus solidifying ties with an emerging South American power.
