Unesco calls for proposals on Swedish cultural heritage

Unesco is inviting proposals for Swedish cultural heritage to add to its lists of intangible cultural heritage.

Unesco, the United Nations organization for education, science and culture, is currently calling for proposals to include more examples of intangible cultural heritage from Sweden. This follows the previous inclusion of practices such as the fäbodbruk (shieling farming) and the Sagobygden folklore region on Unesco's prestigious lists. The nominations allow for the recognition and preservation of traditions that have been passed down through generations.

Since Sweden signed the convention for the preservation of cultural heritage in 2011, the opportunity to nominate elements of cultural heritage has been available annually. The list highlights traditions, customs, and practices that embody cultural significance and can offer insight into the nation's history and identity. Notable examples already recognized include the Swedish-Norwegian fäbodbruk and the Nordic clinker boat tradition, both of which reflect deep-rooted cultural practices.

As Unesco seeks to broaden its inventory of significant cultural elements, this initiative underscores the importance of safeguarding and appreciating cultural heritage in Sweden. The call for proposals invites individuals and organizations to bring forward their suggestions, thereby encouraging community involvement in the cultural heritage recognition process. Such initiatives are vital for promoting cultural diversity and awareness, as well as fostering pride in local and national identities.
