Senior energy official outlines Ukraine's new power generation needs
Ukraine's energy officials have announced the need for an additional 9.5 GW of power generation capacity to be developed with collaboration from the government and the private sector.
Ukrainian energy authorities have emphasized the urgent requirement for 9.5 GW of new power generation capacity as the country seeks to modernize and expand its energy infrastructure. Vitalii Zaichenko, the Head of Management Board of Ukrenergo, highlighted the necessity for effective collaboration between the government and businesses to expedite the development of new power plants. This initiative is particularly crucial given the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine's energy sector due to external pressures and recovery from recent conflicts.
Zaichenko advocated for a diverse energy generation strategy tailored to the specific needs of each region in Ukraine. He pointed out that the energy mix should utilize local resources effectively, with an emphasis on flexible gas generation, biofuel-fired thermal plants, and green energy options. Regions with abundant solar and wind resources may focus on maximizing these renewable sources, while others may benefit more from investments in gas-fired installations to bolster their power supply and reliability.
Moreover, Zaichenko noted that creating a conducive investment climate is critical for attracting the necessary financial resources to build these new power generation facilities. The stateβs role will be to establish favorable regulatory and infrastructural conditions to support private investment, ensuring that Ukraine can meet its growing energy demands and contribute to regional energy security.
