Severe Weather: Ongoing Problems in Ilia, Damages in Achaia – Landslides, Blocked Roads, Flooded Rivers

The Ilia region in Greece continues to face severe problems due to consecutive storms, prompting local authorities to request an emergency declaration.

The region of Ilia in Greece is grappling with serious issues as a result of consecutive weather events leading to landslides, blocked roads, and overflowing rivers. The Deputy Regional Governor of Ilia, Nikos Korovesis, has called for the area to be declared in a state of emergency to facilitate the process for compensating residents whose homes have been damaged and farmers whose crops have been affected by the flooding.

Korovesis reported significant challenges, particularly in areas like Vartholomio in the Municipality of Pinios, Mazaraki in the Municipality of Ilida, Tripiti in the Municipality of Andritsaina-Krestena, and Dibri in the Municipality of Ancient Olympia. He highlighted that there are numerous roads closed due to landslides and that rivers, such as the Peneus, are at critical levels, putting additional strain on the local infrastructure and communities.

The declaration of a state of emergency would enable the local government to initiate procedures for aid and recovery for affected citizens and agricultural producers. This situation underscores the dangers of extreme weather events and the need for robust disaster response strategies in vulnerable areas like Ilia and Achaia as they navigate the immediate impacts and long-term recovery efforts.
