Man fined $30,000 for poaching rare Queensland rainforest python
Clinton Spiteri has been fined $33,615 for poaching endangered snakes in Far North Queensland.
Clinton Spiteri, aged 48, has been fined $33,615 by the Cairns Magistrates Court for illegally capturing six green tree pythons and two brown tree snakes from the Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park in Far North Queensland. The green tree pythons are classified as near threatened and can reach up to $50,000 in value on international black markets, highlighting the significant threat posed by poaching to these species.
The court proceedings revealed that Spiteri acted alongside two co-accused, Buddy Leigh Pogmore and Sarah Castle Leach, who are also facing the same eight charges related to the illegal collection of these protected species. The severity of the charges reflects the serious legal consequences that poachers can face, including hefty fines and potential prison time.
With wildlife trafficking being a growing concern globally, this case not only illustrates local law enforcement's commitment to protecting endangered species but also raises awareness about the ongoing issues of poaching, particularly in environmentally sensitive areas such as the Queensland rainforest. The penalties serve as a warning to others who may consider engaging in similar illegal activities.
