Problems in ferry itineraries due to strong winds – Where sailing prohibitions apply
Strong winds are causing minor disruptions in ferry itineraries across several areas in Greece, leading to temporary sailing prohibitions.
Severe winds reaching up to 9 to 10 Beaufort are affecting ferry services in numerous maritime areas of Greece. The Greek National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued warnings regarding these conditions, which have resulted in operational adjustments made by the Port Authority. In particular, ferry routes from the port of Piraeus to the Argosaronic Gulf are currently being operated exclusively with conventional ships, leaving decisions on departures to the captains based on weather conditions.
Sailing prohibitions are in place for certain routes, including the Volos-Sporades line, as well as other key routes like Arkitsa-Aidipsos and Kavala-Prinos. Conversely, the situation appears to be improving for routes from Kyllini to Zakynthos and Kyllini to Kefalonia, which are set to gradually resume operations after 11 AM today, although they remain closed at the moment. As weather conditions change, it is essential for passengers planning to travel to stay in touch with local port authorities and travel agencies for any updates or modifications to their scheduled journeys.
The ongoing situation highlights the importance of weather monitoring and the adjustments required in ferry operations to ensure passenger safety during adverse weather conditions. With the tourist season in full swing, such disruptions can also have significant implications for local tourism and the economy, making it crucial for authorities to communicate effectively with the public regarding the status of services and safety measures.
