Canada presents new defense plan: aims to reduce dependence on the USA
Canada has unveiled a new defense strategy aimed at decreasing its reliance on the United States and enhancing its national security and sovereignty.
Canada has announced a significant new defense strategy which outlines investments exceeding half a trillion Canadian dollars (approximately €308 billion) aimed at bolstering national security, economic prosperity, and sovereignty. According to M. Carney, a senior official involved in the planning, the country can no longer afford to overly depend on its geographical position and its neighbor, indicating a shift in defense posture due to perceived vulnerabilities.
In the next decade, the strategy allocates about $180 billion for defense procurements and an additional $290 billion for public investments related to defense initiatives. This robust financial commitment is also expected to create 125,000 well-paying jobs across the defense sector. Carney emphasized that strengthening Canada's military capabilities on land, at sea, and in the air is crucial, marking a proactive approach to address changing global dynamics.
The new defense policy has been framed within the context of evolving threats and the need for Canada to adapt accordingly. Carney, known for his critical stance towards former U.S. President Donald Trump, stressed that the world has changed and Canada must evolve with it, which suggests a strategic pivot away from the traditional reliance on U.S. military support in favor of a more autonomous defense framework.
