Increase in buses: the Government updated fares starting this Wednesday and set a new increase for March

The Argentine government has approved new bus fare rates which will increase significantly starting this Wednesday, with another hike set for mid-March.

The Argentine Secretariat of Transport has announced that new fare rates for urban and suburban public transport services under national jurisdiction will take effect this Wednesday. According to Resolution 11/2026 published in the Official Gazette, the minimum fare will rise to $650, which represents a 31% increase from the current fare. This adjustment is part of a broader trend, as another increase to $700 is scheduled for March 16, marking a total increase of 41% from the current rate.

As these new rates roll out, they will closely align with the cost of bus fares within Buenos Aires City and Province, which have been under a monthly adjustment scheme of 2% plus inflation since March of last year. Concern has been raised by business associations regarding unfair competition, especially since current prices in Buenos Aires City stand at $650.11, while the Province's fare is $721.83. The regulation also specifies fares for various travel distances, resulting in a new structure that will impact daily commuters significantly.

This latest fare increase is reflective of Argentina's ongoing economic challenges, where inflation and cost adjustments are becoming common in essential services. Analysts suggest these changes may exacerbate the burden on low-income families who rely heavily on public transport for commuting, potentially leading to broader discussions about transportation pricing policies and their social implications in a struggling economy.
