It Is Never Too Late to Change Personality Traits

A study indicates that both younger and older individuals can successfully change their personality traits through targeted training programs.

Researchers from Germany and Switzerland have provided evidence that personality traits can be successfully altered, even in older age. Led by Cornelia Wrzus from Heidelberg University and Corina Aguilar-Raab from Mannheim University, the study published in Communications Psychology highlights the benefits of a socio-emotional training program designed to help individuals improve their handling of stress and complex social situations. This research suggests that personality is not as fixed as previously thought and can be molded through specific training.

The training program aimed to enhance participants' awareness and management of their emotions, as well as improve their interpersonal relationships. Results showed that both younger and older participants benefited from the program, challenging the prior assumption that it becomes increasingly difficult to change personality traits as one ages. The findings raise important questions about the malleability of personality, particularly in later life, and underline the potential for personal growth regardless of age.

The research opens new avenues for further studies on personality change, particularly across different age groups. With a lack of comparative studies focused on various age categories, this work represents a significant step forward in understanding how personality traits can be developed or modified throughout life. As society places greater emphasis on mental health and well-being, these findings hold implications for therapeutic practices and personal development strategies across all ages.
