Strong winds 'swept' through Thessaloniki: Fallen trees, power outages, dozens of calls to the Fire Department
Strong winds in Thessaloniki caused numerous incidents, including fallen trees, power outages, and disruptions in transportation.
Severe winds from the Vardaris have struck Thessaloniki, with gusts reaching up to 9 Beaufort. The local Fire Department received dozens of calls, responding to 32 cases of tree falls and 57 incidents involving the removal of debris. In total, across Central Macedonia, firefighters tackled 88 tree-related incidents and addressed 33 cases of object removal; fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
Transportation services have also been affected. Hellenic Train announced the suspension of rail services between Sindos and Thessaloniki since last night due to a fallen tree on the tracks, which also caused power outages. Additionally, there were reports of disruptions to airplane landings at Macedonia Airport, further compounding the travel issues stemming from the severe weather.
Power outages were noted in various areas of Thessaloniki, including Melissochori, Pefka, and Therma. While the strong winds are expected to diminish throughout the day, their impact has already led to significant inconveniences for residents and travelers alike, stressing the importance of preparedness for such weather events.
