Philippine Vice President Announces Candidacy for Presidential Election - Daughter of Former President Duterte

Philippines Vice President Sara Duterte has announced her candidacy for the 2028 presidential election during a press conference in Manila.

On the 18th of this month, Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte held a press conference in Manila, where she officially announced her intention to run in the 2028 presidential election. Local media have reported her as a strong contender for the presidency. During the conference, she stated her commitment by saying, "I dedicate my life, strength, and future to my country. I will run for the presidency in the Philippines."

Sara Duterte criticized current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for failing to address pressing issues such as disaster management and rising inflation, accusing him of lacking integrity in his electoral promises. Notably, under the country's political system, the president serves a six-year term without the possibility of reelection, which means Marcos cannot run again. This opens up the field for Sara Duterte as a prominent candidate.

As the daughter of Rodrigo Duterte, former president known for his controversial "war on drugs" leading to a high number of fatalities and currently facing scrutiny under the International Criminal Court (ICC), Sara is entering a complex political landscape. Additionally, in early February, civic groups filed impeachment complaints against her, alleging misuse of public funds, which adds to the challenges she faces as she seeks the presidency.
