Refund of 3.29 million won promised if no profit β surge in online side job course victims
There has been a significant increase in victims of high-priced online side job courses in South Korea, as many consumers have found themselves unable to receive promised refunds after reporting a lack of profits.
In recent times, a growing number of consumers in South Korea have fallen victim to high-priced online side job courses that promise substantial returns. A case reported highlights a consumer who enrolled in a marketing-related online course for 3.29 million won, enticed by a full refund guarantee if no profits were made in three months. However, despite completing all requested tasks, the consumer was denied a refund, contrasting sharply with the initial promises provided by the course operators. This incident is part of a broader trend where consumers are increasingly lured by the prospects of easy earnings through online platforms, only to face frustration and financial loss.
The South Korean Consumer Agency has conducted an analysis of consumer protection claims related to these online courses over the past five years, revealing a sharp increase in reports. While only a few claims were filed in the prior years, the number skyrocketed to 42 in 2025. The majority of complaints were centered around the quality of the courses and failure to fulfill contractual obligations. Many consumers reported not receiving promised coaching or training and found that the methods discussed in the courses did not lead to any real financial benefits, leading to a significant trust issue within this market.
The methods being promoted for profit generation through these courses often include brand promotion and social media marketing, but many consumers have found these methods were misrepresented. While the promise of easy cash through brand advertisement and social media posts may have initially interested them, the reality has been starkly different. As this issue continues to escalate, there is a call for heightened consumer awareness and stricter regulations on these online side job courses to protect consumers from falling prey to such misleading schemes.
