The appeals case concerning the riots that occurred near the Seimas in August 2021 has commenced at the Vilnius District Court. The case has garnered attention due to the involvement of significant political figures, including Agnė Bilotaitė, who was the Minister of Internal Affairs at the time, and Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, the Speaker of the Seimas. Recently, the judges decided that twelve convicted individuals, whose prison sentences are currently suspended, must participate in the upcoming court sessions, as prosecutors seek to revoke these suspensions and impose actual prison sentences. In total, among the 87 defendants in the original case, 84 were found guilty of participating in the riots, with the majority receiving probationary sentences. However, two individuals were acquitted, and one woman's charges were reclassified from participating in the riots to resisting police, leading to her being subjected to restrictions on her freedom.
